Programme 2020

BEETHOVEN - THE EAR OF HUMANITY

11th EDITION: 12th SEPTEMBER - 28th OCTOBER 2020

“Music is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend.”

2020 is the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. The Ascona Music Festival is joining the celebration by dedicating its eleventh edition to the composer.

The artistic director, Maestro Daniel Levy, has created a programme that highlights Beethoven's ability to listen, understand and help the human soul through his music.

The programme begins on Saturday 12th September with a recital by the pianist Silvia Cattaneo, with works by Beethoven: the 6 variations on the theme of Paisiello "Nel cor più non mi sento”, the Sonatas Op.31 n.2 "Tempest", Op .57 “Appassionata" and Op.27 n.2 “Moonlight Sonata" in the Church of the Collegio Papio, Ascona.

It continues with the screening of two musical films. On Tuesday 15th September Murray Perahia Plays Beethoven - Concerts N.1 & 2 with the Academy St. Martins in the Fields;

and on Friday 18th September Claudio Abbado performs Beethoven’s 9th Symphony Op.125 with the Berliner Philharmoniker. The film cycle is presented in collaboration with the production company EuroArts and will take place in the headquarters of the Majid Foundation in Ascona. The same location will also host the presentation and listening experience of the festival's CD, Beethoven, the Piano Sonatas N.5 - N.8 “Pathétique” - No.14 “Moonlight Sonata”, by Daniel Levy. The presentation of the CD will take place on Tuesday 22nd September at the Majid Foundation, in collaboration with the label Edelweiss Emission.

A special place in the 11th Edition of the Ascona Music Festival is reserved for an extraordinary webinar dedicated to Beethoven, the genius of Bonn. The webinar, BEETHOVEN. The Ear of Humanity. Inspiration, Life and Words’, created and presented by the pianist Daniel Levy, will be a deep and original approach to the soul and inspiration of the composer, accessible to all and available in different languages. The webinar begins on Thursday 7th October, organised in collaboration with the International Academy of Euphony.
